Exercising the abs muscles can indeed strengthen the strength of the abs. However, this exercise will not show your abs muscles if they are covered by a thick layer of fat. One study, published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, in 2007 asked participants to complete 12 weeks of resistance training by training only the non-dominant or infrequently used part of the arm. The researchers measured the subcutaneous fat on the participants' bodies before and after completing the exercise program, and found that the participants were able to experience a reduction in fat mass throughout their bodies, not just in the trained arm. Several studies have even succeeded in showing the same thing.

There are several studies that contradict the results of the above study. One study, entitled Spot reduction of subcutaneous adipose tissue, tested whether exercise in one part of the arm muscles reduced subcutaneous fat in the body, and the results found that exercising only in the arm area reduced fat in the arm area. Another published study investigated whether the location or position of the subcutaneous fat also plays an important role or not. As a result, the researchers found that blood flow and fat burning were much greater in subcutaneous fat, which is close to the body's actively working muscles.
