"Имеет место военная интервенция, но не со стороны США или президента Хуана Гуайдо (лидер венесуэльской оппозиции 23 января объявил себя исполняющим обязанности главы государства), а со стороны режима [президента Николаса] Мадуро, Кубы, России и Ирана", - отметила представитель американского дипломатического ведомства. Ее слова приводит ТАСС.
Сотрудница Госдепа также назвала присутствие в Венесуэле военного персонала указанных стран "неприемлемым" и "нетерпимым" для Вашингона, добавив, что США будут принимать ответные меры.
В конце марта пресса писала, что самолеты Ан-124 и Ил-62 с 99 российскими военнослужащими и 35 тоннами груза прибыли 23 марта в международный аэропорт Майкетия имени Симона Боливара в Каракасе. Российский контингент, по предварительным данным, возглавляет начальник Главного организационно-мобилизационного управления Генштаба ВС РФ генерал-полковник Василий Тонкошкуров.
Вскоре после этого в венесуэльской оппозиции заявили, что Россия планирует создать на территории Венесуэлы свои военные базы, в том числе для размещения подводных лодок.
В МИД РФ отвергли обвинения в том, что Россия осуществляет военное вторжение. По данным ведомства, российские военные прибыли в Венесуэлу в соответствии с договоренностями о военно-техническом сотрудничестве и занимаются обслуживанием поставленной из России военной техники.
В МИД РФ также выдвинули встречное обвинение в адрес США, которые якобы вернулись к политике эпохи колониализма.
Венесуэла на протяжении последних лет переживает острый социально-экономический кризис, сопровождающийся девальвацией национальной валюты. Согласно оценкам Управления верховного комиссара ООН по делам беженцев и Международной организации по миграции, республику покинули уже более 3,4 млн человек.
Международный валютный фонд в своем апрельском докладе прогнозирует уровень инфляции в Венесуэле в 2019 и 2020 годах на уровне 10 млн процентов. Дефицит товаров первой необходимости и лекарств привел к голоду, росту смертности и распространению тяжелых болезней.
23 января лидер оппозиции Хуан Гуайдо, назначение которого на пост спикера парламента двумя днями ранее аннулировал Верховный суд, объявил себя исполняющим обязанности президента. Временным главой государства его признали США, к ним присоединились страны Группы Лимы (за исключением Мексики), Организация американских государств и большинство стран ЕС.
Действующий президент Венесуэлы Николас Мадуро назвал произошедшее попыткой переворота и заявил о разрыве дипломатических отношений с США. В его поддержку высказались Россия, Белоруссия, Боливия, Иран, Китай, Куба, Никарагуа, Сальвадор, Сирия и Турция.
